5 thought-provoking reasons to keep well hydrated

I probably don’t need to ask what you’d rather be! But how’s your body feeling – juicily hydrated, or parched and fatigued?

We all know water is essential for human life and drinking it is one of the simplest things we can do, yet most of us overlook its importance. It's almost the forgotten nutrient.

I just delivered a webinar called ‘Get in your flow this summer’ where I focussed on the significance of the element of water to our physical and emotional health. So, whilst water is top of mind for me, I wanted to share some thought-provoking reasons why you should pay attention to your hydration habit this summer and always:

  1. Our bodies are over fifty percent water (up to 75% when we're babies). As water is literally half of who we are and the medium in our body in which all cellular reactions take place. it makes sense that human beings have always considered water to be a sacred source of life, energy and healing, and that when our water balance is out, our energy starts to dwindle.

  2. The lymph system is 96% water. This is the system which regulates water balance and helps defend the body against infection by supplying disease-fighting cells called lymphocytes. It is dependent on water for it to flow freely.

  3. When we’re dehydrated, we risk constipation as our body absorbs back every drop of moisture that it can from our waste which makes stools drier, more compacted and harder to pass.

  4. Water helps cleanse and moisturise the body's largest organ the skin from the inside out and this in turn helps with the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and reduces breakouts.

  5. Even mild dehydration on a chronic basis may compromise metabolic efficiency. The brain can also mistake thirst signals for hunger signals, so making sure we're hydrated may stave off some hunger pangs.
