Putting ACT Therapy training into practice during lockdown
How do you choose to eat and live during lockdown?
Yes, there is definitely much that is out of our control right now - but we do still have options. Even in an anxious or uncertain state, we can choose to be consumed by our thoughts and feelings about the situation, or we can choose to be proactive about that which is in our control and that is important to us.
And, that includes treating ourselves with kindness and compassion, and focussing on making the lifestyle and eating choices that work for each of us at this time (rather than following the shoulds and shouldn'ts that others tell you!).
Enter ACT!
In order to build on my coaching skills and further help my clients with their emotional challenges around food and eating behaviour, this year I have trained in a mindfulness-based psychotherapy called Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT).
I have been practicing the principles in my life and have found this ACT-based infographic very helpful in prompting me to think about the choices I'm making about how I want my experience of the pandemic to be for me, the people I live with, and the community around me.
It is likely that we're all moving between the different stages on the infographic at different times - and it's absolutely normal human behaviour to have that 'struggle switch' on sometimes.
Just keep in mind as you move forward that you do not have control over all your thoughts and feelings, but what you can do is take charge of your behaviour and how you choose to look after yourself during this crisis.
Reflection points - stop and ask yourself:
Are you focussing on what is in your control?
Are you choosing to spend your time on what’s really important to you?
Are you treating yourself with the same kindness and compassion you would extend to others?
Are you open to the difficult thoughts and feelings that will inevitably arise?
Are you making mindful choices about your self-care and diet?
